Larry Heath was fast. There is no other way to say it. And unlike some other athletes that take time to develop speed, Larry was always fast. As a freshman he was All Conference by winning the 100 Yard Dash in the Susquenango Championship Meet. He duplicated the same feat as a sophomore, and finished in second both his junior and senior seasons.
Larry was so fast that more than six decades after he graduated, he is still known as Chenango Forks's Fastest Man, setting our 100 Yard Dash Record at 10.0. This is the equivalent of running 10.94 in the 100 Meter Dash. Not only was Larry a key member of our Class Champion 1961 Team, but he was on three consecutive All Conference 880 Yard Relay Teams, making him one of only two people in Forks history to earn five All Conference selections (along with Mike Ellis, Class of 1966). He was also on three consecutive Class Champion 880 Yard Relay Teams (setting the Class Record on the 1961 team) and finally, Heath was a 220 Yard leg of our School Record holding Sprint Medley Team (a record that still lasts today).
Maybe most impressive of all, Larry is one of a very few people to have earned 16 Varsity letters, making the Varsity Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track teams each year he was in High School at the Forks. Baseball was his first love and he was even invited to attend tryouts for the New York Yankees after graduation… After his playing days were over, Larry went on to coach multiple Nationally ranked ASA Girls Softball teams.
