State Meet: 220 Yard Dash (1960)
Without question one of the (if not THE) fastest humans ever to grace our halls, Jerry Casey was the first Chenango Forks Track Athlete to qualify for the Intersectional Meet (now known as the State Meet), when he ran an insanely fast 22.6 second 220 Yard Dash at Sectionals as a junior in 1960. He later went on to better that time as a senior running 22.5 in the 220 Yard Dash, which is still our School Record to this day. Unfortunately, during his senior season Jerry was controversially disqualified for a false start at the Class B Championship 220 Yard Dash Finals along with three other runners by official Dave Lehman ruining Casey's chance to earn a second trip to the State Meet.
Throughout his career, Jerry earned All Conference in the 220 Yard Dash twice (setting the Susquenango League Record in the event), was Class Champion in the same event, and was a member of two Class and two All Conference winning 880 Meter Relay Teams (one of which set the Class B Record). Not just a sprinter, Casey was a consistent Pole Vaulter, with a personal best of 10 feet, 8 inches. This vault remained on our Top Ten List for nearly forty years. At the last regular season meet of his senior year, Jerry convinced Coach Spalding to allow him to try a brand new event sanctioned by New York State Track and Field that season, the Hop-Skip-and Jump, eventually known as the Triple Jump. Without ever having practiced the event, Jerry completed a jump of 40 feet 3 inches, which is still ranked in our Top Fifteen All Time Triple Jumps in Forks’s history!
